Description

This striking, compact bowl offers a tactile exterior and a smooth black interior – which accentuates the colours of its contents. It’s ideal as a tea bowl or for holding small confections. Handcrafted from a beautifully textured, lacquer-soaked linen applied to a wooden base – in Kanazawa, Ishikawa prefecture, in central Japan – it is part of the NUNOGI collection.

Unlike traditional lacquerware, polished to a mirror-like sheen, the NUNOGI collection embraces an earlier, more tactile stage of the craft. Here, linen cloth – soaked in urushi lacquer – is layered by hand onto the wooden base. In classic technique, this fabric would be hidden beneath further coats. But with NUNOGI, it remains gently exposed.

The result is a quiet dialogue between materials: the weave of the linen, the grain of the wood, the soft sheen of black lacquer within. Structured yet organic, each piece feels grounded and alive – its raw textures inviting touch, its form designed for both use and reflection.

The interior is finished in black lacquer, offering contrast and durability, while the exterior retains the linen’s natural surface – earthy, honest and full of character.

Each piece is individually handcrafted by artisans. Subtle variations in colour, shape or texture are to be expected – these are not imperfections, but quiet marks of its unique character.

To preserve its beauty for years to come:

Avoid exposing the item to high heat. It is not suitable for ovens, microwaves or induction cooktops.

Wash gently by hand using a soft sponge and mild detergent. Avoid dishwashers, dryers, steel wool, or abrasive pads, as these may damage the surface.

After washing, dry the piece thoroughly with a soft cloth.

When storing, place a sheet of paper between items to help maintain moisture balance. For everyday use, this is not essential – though contact with other tableware should still be avoided to prevent surface wear.

Keep away from direct sunlight and strong heat sources such as radiators or sunny windowsills. Prolonged exposure may lead to fading, warping or cracking.

Avoid striking or rubbing the piece with metal utensils.

If cracks or chips appear, please discontinue use, as the piece may no longer be safe.

With care and intention, your NUNOGI piece will age gracefully, deepening in character with time.

As our objects are crafted in small batches and often made-to-order by our artisans, we regretfully do not accept any returns.
