Samuel Alexander
Matcha spoon
NOTIFY ME WHEN AVAILABLE
Description
Usually crafted in bamboo, this ‘chashaku’ has been freehand-carved from freshly felled walnut exclusively for AGOBAY. Its slender shape and shallow tip are for scooping matcha powder into a tea bowl – an essential tool in the Japanese tea ceremony. Each spoon is made with patience and care in Samuel Alexander’s open-air workshop in Czechia, through a multi-step process over more than six weeks.

AGOBAY Showroom ZurichAs one of the first pieces in a series of collaborative creations, this walnut matcha spoon has been carved entirely by hand from one piece of wood by Samuel Alexander. The British green-wood carver slowly and patiently makes his collections – which he calls ‘harvests’, as they appear to have grown organically – from his open-air workshop among the fruit trees at home in rural Czechia. Involving more than 10 steps, each piece begins with an initial split in the log, undergoes a two-week drying process, six coats of natural urushi lacquer, which is derived from tree sap, and a month-long curing stage. It is a practice Samuel describes as patient and meditative.
Weight 4g, length 190mm
Walnut wood, urushi lacquer
Handwash your matcha spoon with warm water only, without soap. Leave it to dry upside down so that water doesn’t pool for long periods of time in the curved end.
