Description

Ark Journal volume 14 highlights a shift in contemporary architecture, whereby a growing number of architects and creatives value remembrance over erasure – building on the past with respect for history, local craft traditions and layered narratives. This issue salutes those who do that with care, curiosity and the courage to remember.

This Copenhagen-based biannual magazine is a celebration of the beauty and simplicity that defines Scandinavian design and architecture. Volume 14 spans rural France with young architects Marion Pinet and Pierre Pollet who embrace vernacular styles, a historic apartment in Tbilisi, the New York living spaces of gallerist Suzanne Demisch and collector Jeffrey Graetsch, and Bosco Sodi’s house and studios in Mexico. It includes architect Keiji Ashizawa on narrative and environment in his work, a tribute to Belgian artist Luc Peire at Peiremuzee, and a case study on raw natural materials shaped into objects of ordered and disturbed geometry at BIG’s exposed-concrete Copenhagen headquarters. Also: post-war designer Tapio Wirkkala’s retreats in Lapland, recalled by his daughter, and Frank Lloyd Wright’s Hollyhock House in Los Angeles, a mythopoetic force in regional modernism.
