Description

The largest and most elongated lantern in the collection, the Nishaku Kinari has an imposing scale tempered by the lightness of its materials. Its tall, open form reveals the rhythmic bamboo structure beneath translucent washi, drawing the eye upwards while retaining a sense of delicacy. Illuminated, it becomes a softly glowing architectural feature.

For 10 generations, the Kojima family has made lanterns by hand in Kyoto, with brothers Ryo and Syun now carrying the tradition forward. Their ‘Kyo-chōchin’ are created using ‘jibari-shiki’, a meticulous method practised by very few workshops today. Unlike faster methods that use a continuous spiral of bamboo, this one assembles individual bamboo rings one by one, bound with thread for strength, then covered with handmade washi paper. The painstaking process gives each lantern a light yet durable structure and reflects the precision and intuitive work of a craft refined across generations.

Made to order. Please allow approximately 6–8 weeks for production.

Diameter: 60cm Height: 120cm

Bamboo, washi paper, thread

To preserve the delicate washi paper and bamboo structure, handle the lantern with care and keep it away from moisture and prolonged direct sunlight. Remove dust gently with a soft, dry cloth or feather duster, without applying pressure to the paper. Use a low-wattage LED bulb to avoid exposing the washi to excessive heat.

As the lantern is made to order, we regretfully cannot accept returns.
