Description

Wide and exceptionally shallow, the Houto offers a striking variation on the traditional lantern form. Its slender profile emphasises the fine horizontal structure of bamboo beneath the washi, while its generous span gives the piece presence without visual weight. Suspended overhead, it appears to float lightly in space, casting a warm and atmospheric light.

For 10 generations, the Kojima family has made lanterns by hand in Kyoto, with brothers Ryo and Syun now carrying the tradition forward. Their ‘Kyo-chōchin’ are created using ‘jibari-shiki’, a meticulous method practised by very few workshops today. Unlike faster methods that use a continuous spiral of bamboo, this one assembles individual bamboo rings one by one, bound with thread for strength, then covered with handmade washi paper. The painstaking process gives each lantern a light yet durable structure and reflects the precision and intuitive work of a craft refined across generations.

Made to order. Please allow approximately 6–8 weeks for production.

Diameter: 50cm Height: 17cm

Bamboo, washi paper, thread

To preserve the delicate washi paper and bamboo structure, handle the lantern with care and keep it away from moisture and prolonged direct sunlight. Remove dust gently with a soft, dry cloth or feather duster, without applying pressure to the paper. Use a low-wattage LED bulb to avoid exposing the washi to excessive heat.

As the lantern is made to order, we regretfully cannot accept returns.
