Description
Hand-crafted by the fourth-generation family-run Bamba Dyeing Factory in Kyoto, this Auspicious furoshiki has been made using a traditional – and now rare – Japanese method of manual stencil dyeing. The joyful motifs carry deep meaning, with the red seabream warding off evil spirits, the curved shrimp symbolising long life, and the ‘shochiku’ plums representing resilience and hope.

AGOBAY Showroom ZurichFuroshiki were originally used in Japan as cloths spread beside the bath – ‘furo’ meaning bath, ‘shiki’ meaning laying out – to hold clothing before washing. Now, they have many versatile uses, such as an inner bag or reuseable wrapping cloth for your lunchbox, gifts or even luggage.
As one of the last of its kind in Japan, Bamba Dyeing Factory stands apart in an industry now shaped by mechanisation. The family business on the outskirts of Kyoto – founded in 1913 as a kimono dyeing house – specialises in ‘katazome’, the meticulous practice of manual stencil dyeing. It’s a labour-intensive process that results in one-of-a-kind, richly pigmented fabrics. The fragility of this fading craft, paired with the depth and presence of work shaped by human hands, are what drew us to form a creative partnership.

Cotton
Your cotton furoshiki can be washed in a household washing machine set at a low temperature and slow spin cycle. There will be no shrinkage and almost no colour loss, but the colour may fade when washed for the first time – we suggest washing it separately for this reason.
After washing, air dry your furoshiki in the shade, as it will shrink if put in a dryer. When ironing, apply heat from the back or place a mid-weight cloth over the top.
As our objects are crafted in small batches and often made to order by our artisans, we regretfully do not accept any returns.
