AGOBAY Showroom ZurichOur bag design draws inspiration from the traditional ‘azuma bukuro’, or Japanese wrapping bag. Developed through repeated refinements in collaboration with Shinya Sakurai of the Sakurai Japanese Tea Experience Laboratory, its graceful form achieves a balanced shape that cradles the tea utensils perfectly. The beige linen fabric is a thick weave, chosen for its sturdy texture, with fibres that were carefully brushed by hand before being woven to offer a pleasant touch and refined presence by Nagoya-based Niwa Futon.
The wheel-thrown unglazed-porcelain AGOBAY matcha bowl by Swiss ceramicist Therese Müller features a wide mouth and rounded base. Its durability comes from the high-temperature sintering process. Therese also made the simple porcelain whisk holder, exclusive to AGOBAY.
To achieve the exact volume of water needed, our AGOBAY matcha water pitcher – hand crafted in walnut by British green-wood carver Samuel Alexander – makes this step easy, with a discreet 80ml marker on the inside.
The OGATA whisk, or ‘chasen’, is carved with precision from a single piece of bamboo, with fine bristles that create an exceptionally smooth foam. Paired with it is the ‘chashaku’, or bamboo spoon, a cherished object in the world of tea ceremony. Hand-carved by skilled artisans, it’s for scooping matcha powder into the bowl.
Our ceremonial-grade matcha is crafted from an Asahi variety of superior tencha near the Uji River, Kyoto. Ground slowly with a traditional stone mill, it delivers rich umami, bright astringency, and the scent of a green temple garden.

The fabric bag:
The outer bag can be machine washed, but the padded part – which is filled with cotton – cannot. This part requires gentle hand washing (press washing). Avoid using a dryer for both parts of the bag; if possible dry them thoroughly in the sun. To iron them, place a pressing cloth over the top so that the fabric doesn’t become shiny.
Matcha bowl and whisk holder:
Designed to be functional everyday essentials, these porcelain objects are not only durable and dishwasher-safe, but also have the potential to last a lifetime unless accidentally dropped or shattered.
Matcha water pitcher:
Handwash your matcha pitcher with warm water only, without soap. Leave it to dry upside down so that water doesn’t pool for long periods.
Bamboo whisk and spoon:
Before each use, soak the prongs of your chasen in hot water for a few seconds to make them softer and more flexible, reducing the risk of breakage. After use, gently rinse the chasen with warm water, avoiding detergent, to maintain its natural beauty and quality. Ensure the chasen is thoroughly dried before storing it with the bristles facing up in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight. The cleaning process applies to the Bamboo Spoon, too.
Matcha: Brewing recommendation: when preparing matcha using the bamboo spoon, it is common to use two heaped scoops for usucha (thin tea) and three heaped scoops for koicha (thick tea). Pour 80ml of 80°C hot water over the matcha powder in the bowl, and whisk with a bamboo whisk until frothy. We recommend storing the tin in the fridge to preserve its full aroma.
Every object is meticulously packaged to ensure its safe delivery. In the rare event of any cracks occurring during shipping, please contact us within a week of delivery, and we will promptly replace the damaged items. As our objects are crafted in small batches and often made to order by our artisans, we regretfully do not accept any returns.
