Shingo Oka

Ceramic expressions

With a deep knowledge of the history of Japanese ceramics, potter Shingo Oka approaches his craft with a distinct individual flair. He simultaneously references the past while infusing modern or cross-cultural nuances into each of his pieces, resulting in original objects that possess not only a quiet beauty, but also a functional nature. Take, for instance, Oka’s ‘Tokkuri’ pitchers, which are traditionally used for serving warm sake, but also double as beautiful vases or objets d’art. These provide the ideal surface for Oka’s pigment drawings. Based in Karatsu, Japan, Oka opts to work in peace and solitude at a converted mandarin farm, dotted with kilns, his atelier and a gallery, set amid mountainous terrain. Here, from his potter’s wheel, Oka explores various forms of expression, determined never to settle on a particular style.
