Guided by Zen Monk Tosei Shinabe
It is with deep gratitude that we welcome Buddhist Zen monk Tosei Shinabe to our Zurich store and café in late October, for a limited series of Zazen meditation sessions for beginners. Rooted in centuries of tradition, Zazen is a seated, mindfulness‑focused practice in which Tosei guides you to observe breath, breath‑born thoughts, and the boundary between self and stillness.
The best way to describe it is in his own words: “The main thing I do as a monk is teach people Zazen meditation. This is because it can be done anywhere. You just have to sit still – anyone can do it. It’s not telling people that you have to believe in anything, so there’s no conflict with other religions or beliefs. It leads to a transformation in the way you observe yourself and others. You realise your unconsciousness and start to observe it through meditation.” So, whether you're seeking focus, presence or simply a moment of calm, these intimate gatherings offer a gentle entry into the transformative power of meditation – and insight into Tosei’s daily practice in Kyoto’s oldest Zen temple. No prior knowledge or experience in meditation is necessary; this three-day series is designed especially for curious beginners.
